Food is high up on the to-do-list when you plan a wedding, corporate event or big birthday bash. How many people are there going to be? What are you going to serve? Are you going to have enough? Are you going to have too much?

The presentation of food affects how much of it we eat, and of course how much we enjoy the meal. Follow these few tips to help get an idea of the food vibe your event needs!

Do you want them to eat like birds?

This is for if you want your guests to snack lightly; either because the big meal is coming later, or because you don’t want everyone to get so full that they become sleepy.

  • Studies have shown that people eat a third less if their food is served on a red (or otherwise dark in colour) plate.
  • Choose food types that are best eaten cold. This way people will carry on snacking later on too, so no food will go to waste. Also, cold foods (Bruschetta and toppings, cucumber cups, salsas, spiral wrap bites, etc.) are the easiest to turn into little art pieces.
  • Have spritzer/champagne refreshers nearby the food table. Snacking on salty food makes alcoholic beverages more enjoyable. So this way, people won’t be shy to snack, and everyone can relax and unwind!

Do you want them to dig in?

This is for if you want your guests to really indulge in the feast that lays before them; meaning you also want there to be as little leftovers as possible.

  • Since the colour of plates affects how much we eat, rather opt for white plates. Though studies have also shown that the shape of your plate affects how much you dish up! Rectangular plates it is, then.
  • Consider family-style serving. It is the most sociable (and probably most enjoyable) way of eating. Since the food is in the middle of the table, guests can dish more throughout the meal without walking through the crowd back to the buffet table.
  • Get creative and design your very own stylish wedding drink! Present it to the tables when the food is served. This will prevent people from ordering soft drinks and heavy alcohol that will make them full faster. Build your drink from ingredients like tequila, whiskey, mint, coconut water, soda water, champagne, bitters etc. - these don’t make you feel so full and bloated!
